We live in the most connected time in history, yet people feel more isolated and disconnected than ever. This morning we will think through this disconnect and specifically dig into how God, through the redeeming work of Jesus, has called his sons and daughters into a new family – the beauty and value of which can only be fully appreciated and experienced as we are regularly connected in meaningful relationships in which we can know and be known.

False teachers had left John’s congregations shaken. He wrote this letter to assure those who remained that since they were faithful to the fundamentals of the faith (a proper view of Christ, obedience, love) their salvation was sure. Today we will see five statements of certainty. Five magnificent, God-glorifying, Jesus-exalting, Spirit-trusting, assurance-giving, foundation-under-our feet-building truths that bring his letter to a glorious crescendo.

In 1 John 5:1-12, John will revisit and summarize what he has been centered on for the first four chapters. Today, we will particularly shine the light on John’s use of the language of “believe.” We will see that, by God’s gracious work, we are able to believe in Jesus. As we continue our journey through the book of 1 John, we find ourselves this morning exploring an intriguing theme found in 2:18-27 & 4:1-6 — how can you know truth from error? John lays out a clarion call for true followers of Jesus to practice spiritual discernment — especially in light of and in contrast to the false teachers that had departed from them. In the midst of confusion, clarity is possible, and ought to be sought.

Today we launch a 12-week journey through the book of 1 John — a short letter, that the Spirit of God has packed full of Gospel-centered, truth-establishing, righteousness-inducing, love-living-out words! This morning, we’ll take a broad sweeping view of the whole letter and discuss some of it’s major themes of “Truth” and “Righteousness” discussed in 1 John 1:1-4.
