This summer we’re planning on taking a team down to Brazil from June 23rd-July 2nd, to aid and assist in mercy outreach and church planting efforts with Jay Bauman and Restore Brazil. We couldn’t be more excited that Jesus has given us this opportunity to continue deepening our partnership and support of a fellow friend and church planter in Rio de Janeiro!
In Matthew 28, before ascending into heaven, Jesus left us with the great commission; to go and make disciples. He wasn’t issuing a new command, nor just giving a set of instructions to a new set of people, but he was instructing his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations. It was a continuation of the command that God gave Adam and Eve when he told them in the garden to be fruitful and multiply and fill the nations, and when he told Abraham that he would be a blessing to the nations. That story continues to this day through the local church. Before Jesus ascended, He told his disciples that He would build his church (Matt 16:18), and the apostle Paul tells us that it is “through the church, the manifold wisdom of God would be made known” to all people (Eph 3:8-11).
The mission of Downtown Cornerstone, is to “build a great city, through the Gospel, for the glory of God.” Not only are we passionate about making disciples and planting churches here in Seattle, but we are passionate about partnering with churches and church planters from around the world to see the fame and glory of Jesus Christ spread to all nations.
Jay Bauman is a pastor and friend in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He and his Brazilian wife, Lu, moved to Brazil about 7 years years ago to start a Gospel resourcing, training and equipping ministry, Restore Brazil, and kick start Acts 29 Brazil (Atos 29 in Portuguese). Jay is currently the Acts 29 Latin American co-director and 3 years ago, Jay started planting a new church in Rio called Igreja do Redentor.
Over the last 4 years, we’ve had the privilege of supporting Restore Brazil through our giving, mission trips, and pastoral training. This year, we again want to continue to deepen that partnership by sending another team to come alongside Restore Brazil, and other local area pastors and church planters in Rio. If you’re not familiar with what Jay is doing in Brazil, check out this video on Restore Brazil.
Although the needs and what we will be doing will vary based on the team and gift-sets of those going, we’ll be likely be involved in everything from children’s outreach ministry in the favelas (slums), to preaching, music, technology upgrades, potentially helping a new church plant launch and more.
We believe that if we are going to go and help teach people how to be a local, committed body of believers on mission, we ourselves need to be a local, committed body of believers on mission here in Seattle. Therefore, it’s important that all of us are operating under the same set of assumptions and on the same page when it comes to the Gospel and missions. As such, this trip is limited and reserved for members of DCC.
Currently tentative dates are Friday, June 23rd, through Sunday, July 2nd. Dates may be shifted a day or two depending on ticket prices and logistics in Brazil. Tentatively team training dates are schedule for the following Sundays @ 5pm:
Approximately $2,500-$2,700 (depending on airfare and visa). This cost includes a Brazilian visa, all transportation, lodging, meals, and materials for the trip and team meetings. This cost doesn’t include a passport ($100) and any spending/souvenir money you would like to take ($50-100).
Do you have a love for the Gospel? Do you have a love for people? Do you have a desire to share your story and love on those who are the least of these? Ask Jesus, and those that God has put around you to be praying for you, whether this is something God is calling you to.
Complete the application below with essay questions. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive confirmation of the receipt of the application. Once approved, you will be invited into a City group with all the details you’ll need to know and start preparing for (important dates, fundraising helps, etc). Application deadline is Feb 20th.
