Church Planting Sunday

Event, News | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

2. CPS_TITLE_620

We are calling this coming Sunday (06.09.13) “Church Planting Sunday”

We hoped to get this information out earlier, but were awaiting final details to come through. Though we will be continuing our series in 1 Timothy, this Sunday we will also focus on the following:

  • Awareness: Raising greater awareness of church planting and the Acts 29 Network that we are a part of. We are part of something much bigger than our individual church.
  • Mission: Feature several clips to highlight how God is spreading the gospel through Acts 29 around the world.
  • Sermon: Devote a portion of the sermon to the priority and necessity of church planting.
  • Giving: Take a special offering to raise additional funding for local and central funding in order, by God’s grace, to see the gospel spread through the planting of more churches, everywhere.

“What is the Acts 29 Network?”

The Acts 29 Network is a network of churches that plant churches that plant churches that plant churches all around the world. Acts 29 specializes in assessing, equipping, coaching and networking church planters. The goal of the Network is to continue the good work that began in the first 28 chapters of Acts, pushing back what is dark in the world, and heralding the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ by establishing more Bible-believing, Jesus-loving, gospel-proclaiming churches everywhere. You can learn more about the Acts 29 Network by visiting their website here.

“How can I help plant churches?”

There are two primary ways that you can help: pray and partner.

  • Pray: (1) Please be praying for our church and the other Acts 29 churches in the Northwest region. You can get a full list on the Acts 29 website. (2) Be praying that God would raise up an army of gifted, called and qualified men to plant more churches in our city and the cities of the world.
  • Partner: One of the biggest hurdles to church planting is often financial. It takes resources to plant churches, therefore a key component of Church Planting Sunday is the special offering.

“What is the special church planting offering?”

This special offering will help plant churches here and throughout the world. Of the total raised, 60% will be donated to Acts 29 and 40% will assist Downtown Cornerstone in its own church-planting efforts. There are two basic ways to give:

Give on Sunday: Write “Spread the Gospel” on the check memo line and place it in an offering basket. Or, you can give by cash. All cash contributions this Sunday will go towards church planting.

Give online: Or, you can give here through our online giving portal. To give towards church planting select the “Spread the Gospel” fund and follow the directions. Everything given over the next two weeks, starting today, will count towards this year’s Church Planting Sunday efforts.

For Jesus’ fame and the joy of all people,

Pastor Adam

Our Prayer for the Years To Come

It is our prayer that God would use DCC to sink the roots of the good news of Jesus Christ deep into the heart of this great city. We invite you to join us as this story, His story, continues to be written. “O Lord, [we] have heard the report of you, and your work, O Lord, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known…” (Hab 3:2)

Get Baptized This Easter

, , , City Life, Event

Join us Easter Morning for baptisms

On Easter Morning we will celebrate our third round of baptisms together as a Jesus-loving, Bible-believing, Gospel-centered church in the heart of downtown Seattle!
In baptism we identity with Jesus in his death (being immersed under water) and his resurrection to new life (being brought out of the water) for the forgiveness of sin (Rom 6:1-10; Col 2:12). It is outward symbolic act that demonstrates the inward reality of what God has accomplished on the cross through His Son. In so doing, we identify ourselves with Jesus (Acts 10:48; Rom 6:3; Gal 3:27), the universal church (1 Cor 12:13), and the local church (Acts 2:41).

Why should Christians be baptized?

Jesus commanded that all Christians be baptized (Mat 28:19).

Who should be baptized?

Every baptism in the New Testament is preceded by repentance of sin and faith in Jesus (Acts 2:38-41; Acts 2:41; Acts 8:12; Acts 9:18-19; Acts 10:44-48; Acts 16:14-15, 40; Acts 16:29-36; Acts 18:8; Acts 19:1-7; Acts 22:16). In other words, only Christians who have repented of sin and have trusted in Jesus should be baptized. Therefore, all non-Christians and children too young to demonstrate repentance and articulate faith should be excluded.

Some frequently asked questions about baptism:

Q: “Should I be baptized if I was already baptized as an infant?” That’s a good question. The simple answer is: Yes. The biblical model for baptism is: first, belief, then baptism as evidence of your belief. In other words, baptism is an outward symbolic reality of a new inner spiritual reality. That clearly wasn’t present as an infant. Technically speaking, you’re not getting baptized “again” as the first time wasn’t a baptism, in the true sense of the term.

Q: “I thought I was a Christian when I got baptized, but now I realize I wasn’t. Now I understand the gospel and truly follow Jesus. Should I get baptized?” The exact answer will depend on your particular story. But, if it is clear that you were not a Christian then, but have since started following Jesus, you should get baptized.

Q: “What sort of preparation is required prior to baptism?” We will pull all of the baptizees together following our church gathering on Sunday, March 24th, to walk through the process and offer some suggestions on how to prepare, practically and spiritually.

Join us Easter Morning

Sunday, March 31st @ 10:00AM

Monthly Prayer Night

, City Life, Event, Prayer

We need prayer

For all our strategizing and preparation, we cannot succeed without the Spirit of God building his church. Please pray with and for us daily. Jesus will build his church, but he does so through the faithful work, service and prayers of his people. There is much spiritual opposition, relational tension, financial strain and physical hardship involved in planting a church. Please join us in prayer to our God who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask, think or imagine (Eph 3:20).

Monthly Prayer Gatherings

On the last Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm, we gather together for an evening of prayer, vision and worship. This event occurs in lieu of our normal weekly community rhythm, and is an opportunity to go before our Father, asking Him to do what only He can do.

What will we do?

Vision. We’ll talk about where we are and where, by God’s grace, we are going.
Worship. We’ll sing to the King.
Pray. Most importantly, we’ll pray. God has been exceedingly generous to us and we can’t help but think that it is due to us asking Him to do what only He can. We don’t ever want to feel like we somehow have this church planting thing covered. This is His church; we are His people.

“Pray then like this: ‘Our Father in heaven…’” (Mat 6:9)
“Pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Mat 9:38)
“…that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.” (Lk 18:1)
