Disciple: The Living Church

Disciple: Living For Jesus, Media, Sermons | by Pastor David Parker

Disciple: Living For Jesus

Over the last 5 weeks, we’ve been unpacking what it means to be a disciple of Jesus, and what it practically looks like to follow Him in our everyday lives. As the good news of the gospel penetrates into our hearts and lives, it makes us a new people who are zealous for good works, and growing in their love for God and others. Today, we’re going to wrap up this series and see how our discipleship isn’t something that takes place in isolation, but something that God designed to be worked out in the context of the local church.

Learners: Living Trust

Disciple: Living For Jesus, Media, Sermons | by Pierce Martin

Disciple: Living For Jesus

In the second half of our Disciple: Living for Jesus series we look at what it is to grow in trusting Jesus as learners. We are all learning from something, we all have a dominant shaping force in our lives. In 2 Peter 1:3-12 Peter reminds us that learning is more than doing, it is knowing who Jesus is. We look at why we learn from Jesus, what we learn from Jesus, how to learn from Jesus, and barriers and application to learning.

Servants: Living Sacrifices

Disciple: Living For Jesus, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Randy Lundy

Disciple: Living For Jesus

This morning we are continuing our six-week summer series called Disciple: Living for Jesus. Our ongoing hope in this series is to provide some theological handles for understanding who we are 'in Christ' and some practical applications for living in light of that. Last week we looked at what it means to be a sent people here in Seattle, and today, we will continue our study and consider how the gospel compels us to serve others for the glory of Christ as living sacrifices.

In Christ: Our Living Union

Disciple: Living For Jesus, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

Disciple: Living For Jesus

The first sermon of the series, we begin with what it means to be “in Christ” – also known as our union with Christ. This union is the beginning, middle, and end of all our discipleship. To be in Christ is an invitation to evaluate our identity in a new way. Our identity in Christ is the heart of what it means to be Christian. In Christ we are a new creation, and experience a dynamic, relational oneness with Christ. As we focus on four different aspects of this union, we see that we are represented by Jesus, that He becomes the foundation of our life, that we are loved with the same love the Father has for the Son, and that we now live before the face of God. Our greatest treasure is being in Christ.

Faith Works

James, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

James

In James 2:14-28, James asks us to evaluate our faith versus our works, the heart of which is evaluating true faith versus false faith. Faith that does not work is dead. A faith that does not serve to create real, genuine changes in our lives and form the people we are becoming is not a true faith. True faith is a living trust and personal embracing with the person and work of Jesus. It goes beyond mere ascent to the truth and creates tangible spiritual fruit evident in our daily lives. While this fruit is not itself what makes us right with God, it is the inevitable result of a heart that trusts and depends on our Savior.

The Triumph Of Mercy

James, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

James

We are now moving into the second chapter of the letter of James. Today, in James 2:1-13, we reach the topic of partiality, or favoritism. We will see how the sin of partiality can be active in our lives and will discuss how we should respond with gospel-mindedness to one and other amidst our differences.

Doers Of The Word

James, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

James_LD_final-(620x130)

The letter of James is filled with pastoral exhortations and urgings to “doers of the word and not hearers only” (James 1:22). Contrary to popular thought, Jesus is not merely after our niceness, our morality, our ritual, or our attendance. He wants our hearts, and our deepest joy, and that should have some practical implications in our daily lives. Today, in James 1:18-27, James explains that one of those implications is how we approach and respond to God's Word, the Bible.

The Father Of Lights

James, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

Jesus is not after our niceness, our morality, our ritual or our attendance. He wants our hearts, and our deepest joy, and that should have some very practical implications in our daily lives. Today's section, James 1:16-18, will help us do that, in particular, when it comes to how we view and relate to all that is good in our lives and our world.

Temptation

James, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

James_LD_final-(620x130)

We are about a month into our new series through the practical, pastoral and passionate leter of James. James was an Apostle, the leader of the early church in Jerusalem and a half-brother of Jesus. His goal in writing was to urge followers of Jesus to move beyond superficial faith to whole-hearted, sincere devotion. That makes this leter deeply relevant even 2,000 years after its writing. Today we arrive at 1:12-15 and the topic of temptation. As usual, James offers us help and hope, in his no-nonsense, awkwardly straight-forward, style by describing how temptation works and, in so doing, how we can overcome it.
