Wage the Good Warfare

, 1 Timothy, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

1 TimothySince God is the most precious reality in the universe, it is crucial that we get him right and not merely rely on our own personal preferences, hunches about who He is and what He is like. Everything is on the line if we God – and his Gospel – wrong. This is just as true today as it was 2,000 years ago when this letter was originally written which, of course, is why we’re studying it together. In light of all this, it is not surprising that Paul chooses to close his introduction by emphasizing that the Christian life is a battle and encourages us to “wage the good warfare.” (1:18) The word “good” means “noble” or “excellent”. In other words, Paul is saying that this is most important war you can fight.

Jesus Christ Came Into the World to Save Sinners

1 Timothy, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

1 TimothyThe Apostle Paul is deeply concerned about the health of the church(es) in Ephesus as it were in danger of wandering from the gospel of Jesus Christ and, instead, turning to self-made ideas about God. Self-made ideas of God are not only useless, they are destructive. We might think, “Oh, well, we’re beyond that today.” The truth, however, is that we are not. Paul’s main goal in this short section is to illustrate the true nature of Jesus’ gospel by sharing his own story of conversion.

The Gospel of the Glory of the Blessed God

1 Timothy, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

1 TimothyWe are on the very front end of a new sermon series through one of the Apostle Paul’s letters to his close friend, disciple and gospel-parter, Timothy. Today, this letter is known as First Timothy. In fact, this letter is one of three letters (also 2 Timothy and Titus) that are referred to as the pastoral epistles (or letters) in which Paul urges Timothy and Titus to fulfill their responsibilities as pastors over God’s people.

God our Savior, Hope, Father & Lord

1 Timothy, Media, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

1 Timothy

What is truth? Is there truth? If so, how should our lives be shaped by the truth? These aren’t new questions. In fact, nearly two thousand years ago the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to his close friend and associate, Timothy, to address these very same issues. Today we refer to that letter as First Timothy. In this letter, Paul’s overriding concern is with the truth of Jesus Christ – that it be faithfully protected, lived out and handed on.

Life and Death

Media, Proverbs: Living Wisdom, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

Proverbs: Living Wisdom
This is the last week of our study through the book of Proverbs.  Throughout our study, we covered numerous topics, including: wisdom, foolishness, the heart, pride, words, emotions, self-control, friendship, husbands, wives, singleness, parenting, planning, working, sexuality, money and justice.  We need wisdom in every area of life and Proverbs helps us to do just that.  Today we are going to look at our final topic: Life and Death.  Typically when we say something is a matter of “life and death”, we mean that it matters above all else.  That's definitely true today.

Justice, Righteousness & Rejoicing Cities

Media, Proverbs: Living Wisdom, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

Proverbs: Living Wisdom
In Proverbs, God meets us on the street and delivers aid in the skill of living, particularly in the areas of life where the normal rules of life don’t apply. What we’ve seen every week over the last five months is that this wisdom finds its source in the fear of the Lord – or, in letting God be God to you in every corner of your life. Today we look at another corner: justice and righteousness. How do we navigate life in a world of need, poverty, and various degrees of injustice?

Money

, Media, Proverbs: Living Wisdom, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

Proverbs: Living Wisdom
The mega-theme of Proverbs is wisdom. This book, and the Bible, define wisdom as the skill of living, particularly in the areas of life where the normal rules of life don’t apply. This wisdom isn’t found where we’d normally think to look. This wisdom finds its source in letting God be God to you in every corner of your life. So far we’ve looked at what happens when you let God be God to you when it comes to our words, our singleness, our marriages, our parenting, our pride, our sexuality and more. Today we’re going to look at what happens when we let God be God to us in the area of money.

Work

Media, Proverbs: Living Wisdom, Sermons | by Pastor Adam Sinnett

Proverbs: Living Wisdom
One of the reasons people throughout the centuries are drawn to the book of Proverbs is that it shows us our God is not some detached, disinterested divine dictator. Rather, the God of the Bible, our God, is deeply involved. He cares about the details and decisions of our life. He cares what we do with our life. This week we see that he cares what how we view and handle our work. All of our work matters to God and God matters to all of our work.
