The third Sunday of January has become known as the national Sanctity of Human Life day to coincide with the January 22nd, 1973, Supreme Court decision known as Roe v Wade. That decision removed every state law that previously protected humans in their mother’s womb and made abortion legal in all 50 sates. However, to be emphatically clear, this isn’t merely about politics but is ultimately about God. This morning, we’re going look at how the gospel of Jesus moves and motivates us to a life of good works through Titus 3:3-8, and then consider the implications this has in our defense of the unborn.

Paul explains the supreme worth and incomparable beauty of Jesus and asserts that “To live is Christ, and to die is gain”. Therefore, he writes in order to call the Philippians – and us – to live in such a way that we put Jesus’ worth on display in our daily lives. Today, in Philippians 2:19-30, we reach a summary section that points to the lives of two men who exemplify this life: Timothy and Epaphroditus. This section gets us asking some important questions: What is my life really about? What, and for whom, am I living for? Am I available to Jesus and others? Am I faithfully stewarding my God-given gifts and resources? Do I have a real concern for others?

We are all living our lives in awe of something. Whether we realize it or not, whatever thing we hold in awe has a tremendous shaping influence on us. In 2 Cor 3:17-18 Paul describes the glory of God and the work of the Spirit as we behold His glory, and are transformed into who God created us to be. We have only two options: either we are attaching our sense of well-being to earthly treasures and our own glory, or we attach it to the King of Glory himself, the God to whom all lesser glories point.

In Philippians 2:14-18 Paul continues the call to live in a way that displays the supreme worth of Jesus through the simple command to, “Do all things without grumbling or disputing”. In this way the children of God shine as lights in the world. Throughout the bible we see the history of God's people and the affect of a grumbling, dissatisfied, critical heart. In grumbling about life, our hearts are ultimately saying they are critical of God and His sovereignty. In Jesus, however God's people have the assurance that He is working all things together for our good, and because of this are called to a discerning, defiant, hope-filled optimism that shines the reality of Christ as a light in the world.

Today, in Philippians 2:12-13, we see a topic that is of great importance, relevance, and gravity. The matter that Paul discusses here is something that we come up against every day: What is our role in following Jesus and what is God’s role? To what extent is our growth, maturity, and battling sin our responsibility and to what extent is it God’s responsibility? If we exert effort as we follow Jesus are we being self-righteous legalists or is that simply an appropriate expression of faith?

This week, in Philippians 2:1-11, Paul continues the theme of love and unity, but directs our attention to Christ, as the perfect example of humility and sacrificial love. Because of Christ’s example, we can not only have confidence in his work on our behalf, but we can also take comfort in knowing the whole reason that we celebrate Christ at Christmas is because He was, is, and will always be the perfect God man. It’s easy to find joy in the superficial, but our true Joy will only be found when we recognize the humility and service of our great God and King.

There is a direct correlation between what we value most and how we live. That is why the bible never begins with our behavior, but always with our hearts. In Philippians 1:27-30 Paul exhorts us to, “let our manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ”. We are called to live lives that display the supreme worth and incomparable beauty of Jesus, so that we might stand together in the unity of the Holy Spirit, striving for the spread of the Gospel.

Today, in Philippians 1:12-26, we see the great over-arching truth that ties the entire letter together. In many ways this section is a bit like a journal entry in which Paul pulls back the curtain of his heart and reveals his greatest treasure, deepest hope, and highest good – his very life. If we’re paying attention, this should cause some healthy, personal evaluation on our part. What are we living for? If we pull back the curtain over our hearts, what is it that we are really after in this life? What is our greatest treasure?

Life is often complicated, messy, and unpredictable. Brokenness has been a part of the human landscape from the beginning. In Philippians 1:3-11 Paul demonstrates an attitude rich with gospel-shaped thanksgiving and prayer for the church during the worst of personal circumstances. He reminds us again and again that we don't merely need new circumstances but a durable hope and joy that reaches beyond our situation. Cultivating a heart that is joyful requires continual reflection and application of the gospel, commitment to those partnering in the Christian walk, finding comfort in God's persevering grace, and abounding in love and excellence for the glory of God.

If there was ever a letter written to stir Jesus’ people to joy, hope and confidence – even amidst the worst of circumstances – it is Philippians. Paul writes to show us that the gospel, and all of its implications, not only transcends human divisions but also our circumstances. That is what makes this letter a favorite for many. Yet, at the very same time, Paul’s words here are deeply challenging. How is it possible for Paul to be so positive amidst such dire circumstances? How is it possible for him to write with such warmth, joy and sincerity from prison? Is he being real? What does he have that we, too often, don’t seem to have? We get an answer to that in the first two lines of his letter.
