This morning we’ll be continuing our four-part series called, “Disciple”. Last week we learned that to be a Disciple of Jesus, is to live a life of continual learning from Jesus. Today, we’re going to look at our identity as Servants of Jesus.

Today, we’re going to look at our identity as Learners of Jesus. Before ascending into heaven, Jesus gave his disciples (and us) a mission, which is famously known as the Great Commission (Mt 28:18-20). The heart of Jesus’ commission to his church is to make disciples. The term disciple refers to being a student, a follower, or a learner. Therefore, to be a disciple of Jesus means to follow him and learn from him. Now, if Jesus’ final commission was to make disciples, we must know what that entails today in our context and aim to be a disciple-making disciple church. Being a disciple of Jesus is the lifelong process of learning to trust and become more like Him in every sphere of life – and help others do the same.

This morning we gather to thank Him for all He has done and ask Him to do even more in the year(s) to come. In light of our birthday, let’s revisit God’s intention and vision for his church, universal and local, from 1 Peter 2:4-10. What do you think of when you think of the local church? What is it? Why does it/we exist? What is God’s purpose for it? Why are we continuing to move ahead in the planting of a new church downtown?

Today we lit the first candle on the advent wreath, in which many call the candle of Hope, because it signifies a longing, an expectation, a Hope of the coming Messiah. So in once sense, we’re celebrating in an ancient historical hope, waiting for the coming of the Messiah, and in another sense, we celebrate Advent in expectation and Hope, because one day Jesus is coming back again (Heb 9:28).

For most of us, we spend a lot of our time and lives “working”, and whatever we spend the most time doing, we are apt to make it the most important thing in our life. Consequently, we’ll also spend the most time doing what we value as most important. Scripture has much to say about our work, so lets examine Col 3:23 and look at what work is, and how God wants to use our work for His glory, our growth, and ultimately our Joy.

In light of all this, what does it practically look like to follow Jesus Christ? This week we’ll talk about how our identity in Christ gives shape to our daily lives, including our location (family, homes and neighborhoods), vocation (work, career, finances), recreation (rest, play, leisure), restoration (mercy, justice, brokenness), and multiplication (stewardship, growth, others). We’ll also examine discipleship pathway and what it looks like to go from “lost” to “leader”.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is intended to take root in specific local contexts. For us, that’s the city of Seattle. This week we’ll discuss our missional context. Why are we here? Why are cities important? What are the unique challenges and blessings of the city? How do we best take the unchanging truth of the gospel into our ever-changing culture? We’ll also review the history of Christianity in Seattle and our role in Jesus’ continuing story today.

What then is our mission? Why do we exist? How do we measure success? The Bible is clear that we are saved to be sent across the street, and around the world, with the life-changing news of the gospel of Jesus. But, how do we do that? We’ll also talk about our local and global mission of planting churches in our city and the cities of the world.
