The coming of our Savior should give us strength from drawing upon his sovereign power, hope during suffering, peace as we revel in the amazing grace that is ours, desire to join His purposes in the world, and knowledge that the best is yet to come.

Today, we are nearing the end of our study of the Book of Ruth. We see how God is ever-present, guides our lives for our good, and is with us even when life leads in the direction we least expect. In Ruth 4, Boaz redeems the land of Elimelech, marries the widowed Ruth showing us a small picture of God’s redemptive love, and sets into motion the series of events that leads to the birth of our Savior.

Today, as we continue through Ruth 3, we encounter a deeply human story that reveals the invisible hand of God at work in the every day, ordinary lives of His people (people a lot like you and I) – even when life takes us in directions we least expect.

This morning we are beginning a new series through the small, but explosive, book of Ruth. This four chapter story has instructed, convicted, and encouraged God’s people for 3,000 years. One commentator refers to it as an, “ancient literary masterpiece”. Yet, perhaps what is most extraordinary about this story is its ordinariness. It is a deeply human story that reveals the invisible hand of God is at work in the every day, ordinary lives of His people – even when they turn dark. Today, in Ruth 1, we will see one such example.
