The conquest of Canaan is completed in Joshua chapter 11, as God gives his people victory, rest, and the promised land as their possession. The summaries in chapters 11 and 12 highlight God’s faithfulness to all of his promises, and point to the future rest God’s people will receive in Christ.

In chapter 10, the Lord fights for Israel and brings a complete victory over the southern kingdoms of Canaan, demonstrating his sovereignty over all creation, his victory over all his enemies, and his Lordship over all kingdoms – and calls us to trust him, to fight sin in his strength, and to submit our lives under his Lordship.

In chapter 6, Israel takes the city of Jericho through unusual means, highlighting God’s presence and power. Because God is faithful to his word, his judgment, and his mercy—we should live in faithful obedience, repentance, and life-long devotion.

In chapter 5, Israel acts in obedience to their covenants with God, acting in faith to be holy, and to celebrate God’s deliverance. Joshua meets the commander of the Lord’s army, as a reminder of God’s presence and a call to continuing faithfulness, so that they might flourish in God’s promised land.

Rahab reminds us that no one is too far for God to reach, redeem, and use for his good purposes.

Today we begin a new series in Joshua, which details God’s faithfulness to his promises. Israel, as God’s people, stand on the edge of the promised land, with Joshua as their new leader, ready to take possession of their inheritance. Yet before they can do so, they must know that God is with them as they face the battles ahead. We, too, need God’s presence, which is ours in Christ, to live new lives.

We continue our series in the Psalms called Singing in the Dark in which we’re focusing on five psalms of David when he was in trouble and distress. Its purpose is to help us learn what it means to look to God to protect us, lead us, and deliver us, in His steadfast love and faithfulness. Today, we look at Psalm 59, where David prays for God’s intervention and deliverance from his enemies. Psalm 59, when understood through Christ, calls and equips us to pray for justice.
