The coming of our Savior should give us strength from drawing upon his sovereign power, hope during suffering, peace as we revel in the amazing grace that is ours, desire to join His purposes in the world, and knowledge that the best is yet to come.

Today, we are nearing the end of our study of the Book of Ruth. We see how God is ever-present, guides our lives for our good, and is with us even when life leads in the direction we least expect. In Ruth 4, Boaz redeems the land of Elimelech, marries the widowed Ruth showing us a small picture of God’s redemptive love, and sets into motion the series of events that leads to the birth of our Savior.

Today, as we continue through Ruth 3, we encounter a deeply human story that reveals the invisible hand of God at work in the every day, ordinary lives of His people (people a lot like you and I) – even when life takes us in directions we least expect.

This morning we are beginning a new series through the small, but explosive, book of Ruth. This four chapter story has instructed, convicted, and encouraged God’s people for 3,000 years. One commentator refers to it as an, “ancient literary masterpiece”. Yet, perhaps what is most extraordinary about this story is its ordinariness. It is a deeply human story that reveals the invisible hand of God is at work in the every day, ordinary lives of His people – even when they turn dark. Today, in Ruth 1, we will see one such example.

False teachers had left John’s congregations shaken. He wrote this letter to assure those who remained that since they were faithful to the fundamentals of the faith (a proper view of Christ, obedience, love) their salvation was sure. Today we will see five statements of certainty. Five magnificent, God-glorifying, Jesus-exalting, Spirit-trusting, assurance-giving, foundation-under-our feet-building truths that bring his letter to a glorious crescendo.

In 1 John 5:1-12, John will revisit and summarize what he has been centered on for the first four chapters. Today, we will particularly shine the light on John’s use of the language of “believe.” We will see that, by God’s gracious work, we are able to believe in Jesus. The whole book of First John was written so that we would know that we have fellowship with God; that we would know that we are genuine children of the King. Today in chapter 4, John brings back several themes that we’ve been exploring throughout this book, namely, that we understand the one true God and His love for us that was revealed in Jesus Christ. Without a proper understanding of God’s love, we won’t know how to receive His love, love Him in return, and most importantly, love others.

In many respects the whole book of 1 John is one big test, answering the question: How can we have assurance that we are truly His children and He is truly our treasure? John continues to unpack these themes in chapters 3 and 4, giving us the test of whether or not we are children of Him by the way we understand His love for us, and in turn our love for others. Today we’re gong to look at how we gain assurance for our hearts and confidence before Him through the Gospel and genuine brotherly love.

In 1 John 3:11-18, John is circling back to the centrality of love to the good news of Jesus. John continues his description of two paths we can take in life. He starts with a contrast between love as evidence of life and hate as evidence of death and then he demonstrates the heart of love through Jesus perfect sacrifice for us. John ends this section of his book with a challenge to love each other in generous, practical ways.
